Windows Phone 8 : Configuring Basic Device Settings - Wi-Fi Networking (part 1) - Enabling or Disabling Wi-Fi, Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network

Even though Windows Phone 8 is designed to access the Internet through a cellular connection, the phone also supports Wi-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi connections allow for faster Internet connectivity than what is possible through a cellular link, and using Wi-Fi has the added benefit of not incurring any data charges on your cellular bill. All Windows Phone 8 devices include support for 802.11b and 802.11g; some phones also offer 802.11n support.

1. Tap Wi-Fi.

2. Use the slide bar to enable or disable Wi-Fi.

2. Verify that Wi-Fi Networking is enabled.

3. Tap the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to.

4. If the network is secured, it prompts you to enter the network password. If you have trouble entering the password blindly, you can select the Show Password check box to make the password visible. Remember that most wireless access points use case-sensitive passwords.

5. Tap Done. You see a message indicating that you are connected to the wireless network.

Some organizations disable SSID broadcasts to hide their wireless networks. Windows Phone 8 fully supports connecting to a hidden Wi-Fi network, as long as you know its name. If you need to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network, go to the Wi-Fi settings screen and tap the Advanced button. Then tap the Add icon at the bottom of the screen and enter the name of the network you want to connect to. It is worth noting, however, that connecting to a hidden wireless network decreases the phone’s battery life.
