Get to a Site’s People and Groups Settings Page
A useful page when managing security on a
site is the People and Groups settings page. This page allows you to
browse through the groups available in the site and see which users and
security groups are assigned to each SharePoint group.
To get to a site’s People and Groups page,
open the site’s Site Actions menu and click the Site Settings option in
the menu. In the Site Settings page, click on the People and Groups
link (refer to Figure 1).
The People and Groups page shows the names of
the available SharePoint groups in the left navigation pane. You can
click on them to see the users and security groups that belong in them.
Tip
If your site has a lot of SharePoint groups,
the left navigation pane will show only the first dozen or so. To see
all the groups, click the More button at the bottom of the list of
groups. This opens a page with all the groups in the site.
Check What Permissions a User or a Group Has on a Site
To check what permission a specific user or a
group has on a site, open the site’s Permissions Management page and
click the Check Permissions button in the Check section of the ribbon
(refer to Figure 2).
The dialog that appears allows you to select a user or group by typing
the user name or group name in the User/Group box. You then perform a
check by using the Check Now button (see Figure 3).

When you click Check Now, the dialog displays the permission levels the user or group has and through which group. In Figure 4
you can see that the user Jane Doe has been given some permissions
directly, and she has other permissions because she belongs to a group.
