Microsoft offers a subscription-based music service called Xbox Music Pass (www.xbox.com/en-US/music/music-pass). An Xbox Music Pass subscription enables you to play unlimited music on your Windows Phone 8 device or other compatible devices.

After you have registered for an Xbox Music Pass subscription, you can link your phone to your Xbox Music account and have full access to it from your phone.

Connecting Your Phone to Xbox Music Pass

To connect to Xbox Music Pass, you must configure your phone to use the same Microsoft account as you used when you signed up for it. You can connect your phone to your Xbox Music Pass by opening Music+Videos from your phone’s Home screen (or accessing it from the App List) and then following these steps:

1. Tap the Menu icon.

2. Tap Settings.

3. Verify that the Connect with Xbox Music slide bar is set to On.

4. Verify that the Xbox Music Cloud Collection slide bar is set to On.

It’s Not All Good

For Xbox Music Pass to work, you must configure your phone to use the same Microsoft account that you used when you signed up for Xbox Music Pass.

The phone can be a little misleading because the configuration screen that you used when you enabled Xbox Music Pass support contains a link called Xbox Music Account Settings. However, this link does not seem to do anything to actually authorize the phone to play Xbox music. While writing this book, I struggled for several hours trying to figure out how to authorize my phone. I didn’t realize that Windows Phone 8 devices are authorized automatically.
