Line Printer Daemon service

The Line Printer Daemon (LPD) role service can be added to provide printer support for UNIX-based computers. By installing the LPD service, you can share printers in which UNIX-based computers can connect using their native printing protocol.

Internet Printing

The Internet Printing role service installs services to support the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and a Web site where administrators can manage printers installed on the print server. In most cases, you will probably not want to allow your network printers to be accessible via the Internet; however, by using Internet Printing you can provide an easy-to-use interface for new admins or users to manage print queues and connect to shared printers.

Distributed scan server

The distributed scan server role service provides network scan management using Windows Server 2008 R2. Using scan management, you can administer network scanners on your network as well as process and route scanned documents. When adding the distributed scan server role service, there are several options that will need to be configured:

1.	First you will need to specify a service account for the service to run (see Figure 11). This account needs to be an Active Directory domain user account. Figure 11. Scan Management Service Account.
2.	Next you will need to specify the temporary folder location to store scanned files while they are being processed by the scan server.
3.	You also need to specify an SMTP mail server for relaying notifications from the scan service (see Figure 12). Figure 12. Scan Management Outgoing SMTP Server.
4.	Next you will need to specify a certificate to use to provide SSL encryption between the scan server and clients. For testing purposes, you can choose to use a self-signed certificate; however, for production deployments you should use a certificate from an authorized certificate authority.

After you have configured those options, the role service installation will be complete. You will then be required to restart the server before using scan management.

Once the server reboots, you can access the scan management console via Server Manager. You can configure scan management to accept scanned files from network scanners and route them to network shared folders, SharePoint sites, or e-mail. Use of scan management services in Windows Server 2008 R2 allows you to centrally manage scanning processes and workflows for network scanners.
